Animal Shelter Wish Lists

It’s fun to give gifts to our dogs, but it’s even better to give back to animals in need. You can donate food, supplies, money, or even time to help dogs find their forever homes over the holidays.

How Do I Find Animal Shelter Wish Lists?

Shelters and rescues will often post their lists of what they need on their websites or social media platforms.

For example, Best Friends Animal Society has year-round animal shelter wish lists for each of their sanctuaries. You can order items online to donate to their locations in Utah, California, New York, and more.

If you don’t have a specific shelter you’d like to donate to, try searching for an animal shelter wish list on Amazon. Most of the items shelters need are available to purchase online and will be sent directly to their shelters.

What Can I Donate?

It’s best to look at the animal shelter wish list before deciding what to donate. You’ll typically find items like food, toys, bedding, and cleaning supplies.

Try your best to donate the exact item the shelter needs – especially if they are asking for food. Some dogs need special diets and cannot eat the same food as other pups in the shelter.

Pay attention to the priority of the items on animal shelter wish lists. There may be some things they are in desperate need of and other items they are merely accepting donations of.

Should I Donate New or Used Items?

New and unused products are the most helpful donations on an animal shelter wish list. This means they don’t need to be worried about any sanitary issues that can harm the animals.

Don’t fret if you are unable to donate new items – most shelters and rescues will still accept lightly used items in good condition. Crates, food bowls, leashes/collars, and grooming tools are perfectly fine to donate when lightly used.

Are There Other Ways to Help Shelters Over the Holidays?

You can absolutely give to shelters and rescues in other meaningful ways. If you have no items to donate, many shelters will accept monetary donations to buy supplies or sponsor adoption fees.

Donating your time is another way to help your local animal sanctuary. Shelters and rescues are always looking for volunteers to assist with events, training, and fostering. Contact your local shelter to see if there are any upcoming volunteer opportunities.

A simple way to help animals in need is to spread the word. Even if you can’t donate, you can post an animal shelter wish list on social media and encourage others to help out.
