9 Witchy Dog Breeds

These breeds have mystical pasts and strong behaviors that give off just the right amount of witchy vibes. 

Witches may be widely associated with their feline friends, but we think there’s some dog breeds that give off just as much black cat energy as a black cat themself. In fact, dogs have been associated with witches as familiar spirits, along with other small animals like cats, rats, ferrets, birds, frogs, toads, and hares.

There’s nothing wrong with being a little witchy! Check out these breeds that we think could easily start their own coven. 

Azawakh

Azawakh is a member of the sighthound family from West Africa. They are independent in nature and tend to be withdrawn around strangers, though not aggressive. The breed was originally valued for its hunting skills as well as its use as a guard dog for nomadic tribes.

Shar-Pei

This breed is described as being steadfastly loyal to family, but standoffish with strangers. While typically calm their tenacity and vigor are engaged when a potential threat lurks.The breed’s purplish tongue and wrinkly skin were thought to ward off evil spirits. 

Akita 

The most closely related breed to ancient wolves, Akita’s are a Japanese breed that are described as being courageous and loyal. Many scholars believe that the image of the wolf familiar in witchcraft may have originated from the image of Fenrir, a giant wolf from Norse mythology.

Xoloitzcuintli (Xolos) 

This hairless dog breed is considered one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the world. In Mexican folklore, Xoloitzcuintlis were believed to guard humans in life, having healing powers that could cure ailments like toothaches and arthritis, and guide them in the afterlife. 

Mastiff 

While our mastiff pups are known to be great watch dogs and have just one adorable face, in Greek Mythology a three-headed, Mastiff-like canine, known as Cerberus, guarded the entrance to the underworld.

Chihuahua

A tiny but mighty Chihuahua is known for their courage and tenacity and fierce determination to protect their loved ones. To know a Chi is to love them–and their witchy ways. 

Black Dogs

In Greek mythology, Hecate was the goddess of witchcraft, magic, and the moon. She was often depicted with a pack of dogs, which were believed to be her companions and protectors. These dogs were often depicted as black, and were associated with the night and the underworld.

Shih Tzu

These little dogs, which were bred by Tibetan monks to resemble lions, were thought to be incarnations of mischievous household gods. Shih Tzus can live long healthy lives and adore their families. 

Philippine Forest Dog

Also known as the Witch Dog, this breed had to make our list. These dogs are celebrated in the Philippine Circuit and are beloved strong, agile and active dogs.
