If you’re looking to find a dog food that can help support your dog’s stiff joints, fish oil is definitely an ingredient to keep an eye out for. The good news: dogs who eat Sundays should not need to supplement with additional fish oil, unless specified by their vet. Each of our recipes include above the recommended amounts for DHA and EPA, which should benefit all dogs whether from small to large and young to old.
Fish Oil and Fatty Acids
Fatty acids are the secret powerhouses behind fish oil. Everyone’s heard of them, but you probably could not explain what they are exactly. You’ve probably also heard of good fats and know that fish is one source of them.
So let’s get a little more specific. Fish has certain omega-3 fatty acids, which are good kinds of unsaturated fat. Dogs need to get omega-3 and omega-6 from their diet in a certain ratio. The thing is, they tend to get plenty of omega-6 from the average dog food formula, and it needs to be balanced by omega-3. If they end up with too much omega-6, it can lead to chronic inflammation.
How Omega-3 Helps Your Dog’s Joints
Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and they help support joint health. Fish has two particular omega-3s that only come from marine sources: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
In research studies, dogs benefitted from therapeutic “joint” diets that were supplemented with high levels of EPA and DHA. All 74 dogs in the trial had less discomfort, lameness, pain, and joint severity after being on fish oil for 84 days.
