How does Sundays test for contaminants and keep our food safe?

What testing does Sundays do on finished products?

Every single lot of Sundays is held and cannot ship until it clears pathogen testing for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes at a third-party, ISO 17025:2017 accredited laboratory. That's not a spot check — it's every lot, every time.

On top of that, we conduct annual testing on each recipe for heavy metals — including arsenic, cadmium, lead, antimony, and mercury — plus a full pesticide screen and acrylamide testing.

Our results are consistently well below the maximum tolerable levels set by both the National Research Council (NRC) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) — the two bodies the FDA and pet food industry reference for safe dietary limits.

What about the ingredients that go into Sundays?

Every ingredient supplier provides a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each ingredient before it's shipped to our facility, unloaded, or used in production.

Ingredient-level testing includes, where applicable, microbial analysis based on the risk profile of the ingredient, heavy metal testing, and pesticide screening.

And a reminder: all of our ingredients are human grade. That means they're sourced and handled to the same standards as food made for people.

Where is Sundays made, and what about the packaging?

All Sundays products are produced in a certified human-grade food facility that is compliant with both USDA and FDA human-grade production requirements. The food we make is human grade but intended for pets, and meets all AAFCO dog food standards.

Our packaging is produced at a facility compliant with FDA food packaging standards. We can confirm: no PFAS, no BPA, no phthalates, and compliance with Proposition 65 requirements.

When it comes to packaging safety, we hold ourselves to human food-grade standards — not just the minimum for pet food.

I saw a study online about contaminants in dog food. Should I be worried?

We understand why headlines like these cause concern, and we always encourage dog parents to ask questions — that's a good thing.

That said, it's worth knowing that not all studies are created equal. Some reports from private organizations may use small sample sizes, fail to disclose methodology, report trace detections without context about actual risk, compare foods without adjusting for moisture, or omit independent peer review.

We believe in transparency that's backed by real science — not marketing. Our testing is conducted by accredited, independent labs using validated methods, and our results are measured against recognized regulatory standards.

So what does 'clean' really mean at Sundays?

  • 100% human-grade ingredients, sourced and handled to human food standards.
  • Produced in certified human-grade facilities compliant with USDA and FDA requirements.
  • Every lot tested for pathogens before it leaves our facility.
  • Annual heavy metal, pesticide, and acrylamide testing on each recipe.
  • Certificates of Analysis required for every ingredient before it's even unloaded.
  • Packaging that's free of PFAS, BPA, and phthalates.

We built Sundays because we wanted to make dog food we could actually feel good about — food that's genuinely better, not just marketed better. Dr. Tory created Sundays because she was tired of dog food companies that felt like marketing companies first. Every decision we make — from how we source ingredients, to how we cook them, to how we test finished food — is guided by that same standard.
